Concours d'Elegance Revs Up Car Enthusiasts

March 7-9, Amelia Island is home to one of the world's most innovative vintage auto events - the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance. Featuring more than 250 rare classics from seldom-seen private collections, the 2008 event will honor Parnelli Jones, whose incredible racing career has placed him in more than 20 automotive halls of fame. General Motors will also use the occasion to celebrate 100 years of automotive history, in what is certain to be a birthday party to remember. This year's featured marque is the iconic Thomas Flyer automobile, which won the historic New York-to-Paris "Great Race" 100 years ago.

Black History Month

To celebrate Black History Month, Amelia Island is inviting visitors to experience the island's historic African-American treasures. In 1935, the Afro-American Life Insurance Company purchased 200 acres on the southern end of Amelia Island, which eventually became American Beach - a glorious oceanfront haven for African Americans during the Jim Crow-era of segregation. In its heyday, the beach offered homes, restaurants and nightclubs that attracted musical superstars such as Ray Charles and James Brown. Today, American Beach is the first stop on the Florida Black Heritage Trail.

You can enjoy a 90-minute walking tour of American Beach during your visit to Amelia Island. The tour takes guests to Miss Martha's Hideaway, a home built of hand-molded coquina blocks, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. You can also see the first homes built on American Beach and homes where actor Ossie Davis and jazz singer Billie Eckstein stayed. Tours are $20/person and can be arranged by calling 904-261-0175.

Addison on Amelia Re-Opens

The 14-room Addison on Amelia has re-opened with new owners and a new philosophy. After years of searching for the ideal property and months of hard work upgrading the property to its new luxurious standards, owners Bob and Shannon Tidball opened the doors on January 15. Offering full plated breakfasts each morning, high quality linens and towels, and the finest in toiletries, the Addison now provides special amenities to make guests feel more at home. Over the next year, the Tidballs will also be upgrading bathrooms to include lavish, multiple head spa-showers.

Comprised of three houses, the Addison's main building was originally built during the Civil War era.
